Candle Care + Safety 101
These tips below will give you the optimal result for your candle. Here we talk about safety measures and how to get the best out of your candle. Taking care of your candles, will give them the best quality of life!
Never Judge A Candle On It's "COLD" throw: Sure, the first way we judge a candle is to smell it before lighting, but the truth is..... the best result will be when it is lit. You may actually fall in love with a scent that may surprise you, by experimenting the "HEAT" throw.
Trim Your Wick: THIS IS CRUCIAL. Before a burn, check that it’s not longer than ¼ inch long. A wick that is much longer produces larger flames that may stain your vessel and burn faster than usual. Trimming the wick to ¼ inches BEFORE each burn, ensures that the candle will burn evenly with no wastage. To maintain a steady flame throughout your candle’s lifespan, you’ll want to trim off any excess wick in-between burns as well. When the wax is cold and dry, either use a scissor or preferably a wick trimmer to cut excess wick. The flat tip design of a wick trimmer prevents any soot on the wick to fall onto the unburnt wax. Keeping the wax pool clear of any debris is essential to optimal burning.
First Time Burn: Sometimes people assume that burning a candle for short periods of time ensures it will last longer. While there is some truth to this, it’s more important that your candle burns evenly so that it burns smoothly, thus lasting you even longer. It also takes time for the scent throw to reach its full potential. Allow your candle to burn for 4 hours the first time you light it!
Reach A Full Melt Pool: What is a melt pool? The melted wax that forms from burning the candle is called a wax pool. The longer the candle burns, the larger the wax pool. For ideal burning, the wax pool should reach across the outer edges of the vessel. Upon wax cooling, the pool slowly converts back to solid, and sets the stage for another even and smooth burn. Burning any candle for less than 3-4 hours the first time, may cause an uneven burn and lack of scent throw.
Do Not Burn A Candle For More Than 4-6 Hours: Avoid burning a candle longer than 4-6 hours at a time. Burning a candle for longer may cause carbon to collect on the wick and cause the flame to get too big. This is a general precaution. After 4 hours, put your candle out, let it sit for 1 hour or 2, then go ahead and light it up again!
General Candle Rules:
- A burning candle should never be left unattended.
- Do not place candles directly next to walls or under anything the dangles, such as a plant or curtain.
- Always place a burning candle out of reach from children or pets.
- Avoid placing a burning candle in the path of drafts or moving air as this may produce flame flickering and excessive smoke.
- Keep away from household items that contain flammable materials such as curtains or plants.
- Always burn your candle on a solid, sturdy surface.
- Don’t burn a candle all the way down. For safety measures, stop burning a candle when there is ¼ inch of wax left in the vessel.
- Never use water to extinguish a candle.
- Do not touch or move a candle while lit.
